Founded in 2015 by Nicolas Pascal and Angelique Brathwaite, Blue Alliance MPA was created to explore innovative, self-sustaining funding models for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Recognizing that public funding alone was insufficient to support expanding MPA networks, they pioneered a marine conservation model that integrates economic valuation, science-based practices, and sustainable revenue generation.
Blue Alliance operates MPAs as social enterprises, combining effective co-management with local authorities, support for reef-positive businesses, and evidence-based conservation. This model benefits both marine biodiversity and coastal communities, aiming for long-term financial and ecological sustainability.
With active operations in the Philippines, Belize, Indonesia, and Zanzibar, Blue Alliance works closely with governments and stakeholders to build resilient, self-financing MPAs.
They officially joined MPA Day in 2025, reinforcing their commitment to collaborative marine protection.
Blue Alliance is creating self-sustaining MPAs for the benefit of ecosystems, communities and, ultimately, the planet.
Blue Alliance MPAs works with governments to build and manage MPAs.
